"We
worked under the scorching midsummer sun, when the wide plains shimmered
and wavered in the heat; and we knew the freezing misery of riding
night guard round the cattle in late fall roundup."

the range, the supply of good cooks was always low and the demand

F.S. "Frank" Hastings, SMS Ranch
Manager from 1902 to 1922, became an early marketing innovator using
direct mail successfully to sell top-of-the-line SMS registered cattle
to farmers in the Midwest.
He commissioned booklets, now historically significant, complete with
pictures reflecting all aspects of ranch life and raising cattle.
These hundred page plus catalogs were mailed out each year throughout
the Midwest farming community. From those, farmers with good grazing
lands would place their annual orders. |
